Obituary for Elmer B Kurrle

Elmer B Kurrle
On Saturday, July 14, 2018, Elmer B. Kurrle, beloved husband of the late Mary Rose Patricia (nee Wooden) Kurrle; devoted father of Diane Jewer and her husband Jim, Brian Kurrle and his wife Karen, Blaine Kurrle and his wife Laura, Karen McAllister and her husband Gary; loving grandfather of Adam Jewer and his wife Kim, Kari Grapes, Jeff Unkart, Laura Kurrle, Amanda Rickman, and the late Connor Jewer; cherished great grandfather of Alex Jewer, R.J. Grapes, Rachel Grapes, Kaitlynne Grapes, Finnlee Jewer, Keith Jewer and McKynlee Jewer; dear brother of the late Carolyn Hirschmann, William Kurrle, Goldie Kurrle; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Mr Kurrle was also survived by his loving companion, Kasey, his collie dog.

Mr. Kurrle’s introduction to the Kingsville community began in 1954, when he moved to Kingsville from Baltimore City. In 1961, he and another community member (Les Maynard) opened a food market and deli in the center of Kingsville. The Kingsville Market then became the hub of local interests. In fact, the Kingsville Market, which he owned and operated after Les Maynard died, became a place where neighbors shopped, exchanged stories, and where everyone knew each other’s name. It truly became a place where everyone could go and feel at home.

Elmer Kurrle’s community involvement and support included such things as: the annual tree lighting; key supporter of the annual 4th of July parade; donations to local food pantries and food banks; support of the Kingsville and other Fire Departments; animal shelters; local churches; Boys and Girls Scout Troops; Little League Baseball, and any other community event which needed moral and financial support.

He was active in the American Legion and Veteran’s affairs, (as he had participated in naval operations during World War II in the Pacific aboard PT boats). He was very proud of his service to his country. He was an active boater and fisherman, and loved the Chesapeake Bay and ocean, as it reminded him of his time in the service. He was also an active pilot and loved to fly over Kingsville to get an aerial view of the community.

The Kingsville Market was a family operation, where his wife Pat, daughters Diane and Karen, and sons Brian and Blaine all participated at one time or another in running the business. He loved his family and went out of his way to provide for them and their special interests.

He was known for this forthright speech, and even when he was direct and frank, his responses were always made with integrity; you could bank on what he said and people knew it. The Kingsville Community came to know him as an honest, fair, and principled businessman and dependable neighbor. Although he helped numerous individuals through the years, he was modest about his achievements.

His love of animals extended to life-long ownership of collies and care of woodland animals, which became a sanctuary on his property. If so desired, contributions can be made to the Humane Society of Harford County in his memory.

A Memorial Service will be held at Salem united Methodist Church 7901 Bradshaw Road Upper Falls, Md. 21156 on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 10:00a.m. to pay tribute to this notable and admired and well-loved community member. Interment is private. If desired memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Harford County 2208 Connolly Road Fallston, MD. 21047 www.harfordshelter.org
